From The Rocky Mountain News:
Veteran lawmaker Norma Anderson stunned colleagues Monday by resigning her state Senate seat a week before what would have been her 20th and final year in the legislature.
The Lakewood Republican made her announcement at a gathering of about 75 longtime friends and supporters. Some cried.
“It was the right thing for me to do,” Anderson said afterward. “It was time.”
The resignation is effective at 8 a.m. today. A vacancy committee is expected to announce a successor before the legislative session convenes Jan. 11.

So she does get to pick her successor after all. How do you spell Kiki?
Just like a moderate Republican to upset the political process by resigning her Senate seat. I am confident that Anderson will seek another moderate Republican to take her place. Once that is done, the new Senator will be the incumbent & will enjoy the trappings of incumbency in the coming 2006 election. This was just another way for Norma Anderson to sidestep the true Republicans which have already spent time, energy, and resources to seek the Senate seat in the upcoming caucus & primary for Anderson’s formerly-held seat. Once again, “thank you” to Ms. Anderson for showing your true colors.
I way to Norma Anderson: don’t let the door hit your backside on the way out.
She is the classic RINO (Republican in Name Only), who was never there for the party when it really counted.
She made the careers of Mike Feeley and Deanna Hanna, by interering in the GOP primaries in behalf of liberals in her neighboring senate district, and then refuse to back Lynn Watwood, Penn Pfiffner after they won the primary SHE institigated.
The Jeffco GOP as an organization is a mere shadow of its former self, with her daughter-in-law as chairman.
Now maybe we can get on with rebuilding the GOP, as a force in Jefferson County. If you’ve looked at our legislative team recently, its beyond tragic!
I wonder if Ms. Anderson was just jumping from a train she *knows* is going off the tracks.
Going to be a very BuMpY year for someone with skeletons in the closet… regardless of party.
It didn’t say in the RMN article, but does this mean she is going to take that Insurance appointment for the State? Or will GOV Bill plug her in to one of the vacancies in his staff?
Or after 20 years she wants a change.

You can stop posting now, Coop. I think we got it.
Anyone know what she is planning on doing now?
Good for us Dems she didn’t decide she wanted to go to Washington. She’s the only Republican who could have held the 7th CD…
Anybody know what Christopher Cooper thinks about this news?
Is Lynn Johnson or Guy Heyl the frontrunner — both would be great in my view.
I pray Norma didn’t just post as JeffcoBabe…
So Justin Everett & Mike Kopp didn’t pass muster with Norma eh? Figures, they both talk and act like Republicans.
Any thoughts on what this means for a Dem in SD22?
Hey, Coop, we found you a woman. Her name is JeffcoBabe. She likes long walks on the beach, long walks on the beach, long walks on the beach, and long walks on the beach. Oh, and in case you missed it, she likes long walks on the beach.

Norma has been spinning this web for at least the past couple years with Bill Schroeder. She and Schroeder tried hard to get Frank Traylor Jr. to run to no avail, but convinced his wife Kiki to finally do it. She was afraid Don Lee was going to run for her seat when he was termed out this year, however Lee resigned last year instead. She then was afraid Justin Everett was going to replace Lee, so she stumped for Jim Kerr and got her wish. Norma also had Bill Schroeder elected to the vacancy committee to lead her cronies to select Kiki Traylor, who just happened to announce recently she is running for Norma’s seat. And Norma was at the Foohills “Republican” Women’s Club meeting crowing about Kiki. If Kiki is anything like her inlaws, former legislators Claire and Frank Traylor, then she will make Norma look like Mark Paschall. Frank Traylor donated to Democrat Ed Perlmutter’s senate race against Barry Arrington.

She tried everything in her spell book to get Governor Owens to appoint her to a cabinet position to pad her PERA benefit. Right On, are you sure you’re not JeffcoBabe in Drag? And/or Christopher Cooper? I guess this is multiple posts for multiple personalities day.
Actually, Right On is really known as Run On to those who read his posts.
Norma’s leaving is a blow to K-12 education since she is probably the only legislator who understood school finance.
Yeah, Jeffco Republicans need to nominate more conservative candidates….
What are you smoking and how much history can you rewrite???
GOP Continues to Unravel over State Senate
With just over a week to go before the beginning of the 2006 legislative session, the Republican Party continues to implode over its own ideological divisions, and the result continues to help Dems in our quest to expand our State Senate majority.
Th…
Norma Anderson is exactly what’s wrong with the GOP. Another gutless opportunist, unencumbered by anything resembling principle. If Kiki is anything like the other Trailors, I’d rather see the seat held by a Dem. When are republicans going to learn about backstabbing moderates?
Look at Jim Kerr’s voting record. You can thank Norma for that train wreck too.
We are literally watching the unraveling of the GOP – and irreversible damage done by the Demoncrats – all because of moderate (slepped L-I-B-E-R-A-L) RINOs. Well watch what this gets them.
The moderate GOP will be out of power until some leaders come along and energize it. til then, the Christians and parents and small business owners who ARE the GOP’s base will go to school events, work hard, and STOP WRITITNG CHECKS and voting for pukes like Anderson.
wow, such hatred for a 73 year old woman.
Nice, very classy.
If any republicans would like to spite Norma Anderson, there is at least one democrat running in SD22. I?m sure Keith Igoe wouldn?t mind if you voted for him.

Yeah, cause *all* 73-year-olds are inherently good.
LMAO
Hollywood is missing a real bet for a comedy series.
Wow, what a state. A legislator resigns AND gets to pick the successor… who just happens to be a family relation.
What a state. What a party.

Where did I make that argument?
Bad moon, none of the four announced R candidates are related to Norma. They are Justin Everett, an attorney and consultant; Mike Kopp, a consultant to a nonprofit organization; Barb Neville, an insurance agent; and Kathleen Traylor, a physician at Children’s Hospital and daughter-in-law of late state lawmaker Claire Traylor.
You were maybe thinking of Traylor, but she is no relation to Norma, only to her late mother in law.
I stand corrrected, and thank you. Obviously I misread the line about the in-law status (and to whom).
But it still comes down to a single person naming their own successor, (or at least there’s sure to be some strong-arming of the (snicker snicker, guffaw) “vacancy committee”).
It is time to weigh in and let the blogosphere know that a qualified Democrat has emerged as a candidate for the recently vacated seat of Senator Norma Anderson.
My name is Keith Igoe, and I am that Democratic candidate.
I am a Littleton businessman and father of three. Early last fall, I submitted my candidacy affidavit for Senate District 22 in anticipation of succeeding a lawmaker that I greatly admire. Norma?s ability to hammer out public policy based more on principle than position is one that I as a businessman can respect about her. That is the way you actually get things done for the people you represent.
I came to Littleton a few years ago to accept a position with Horn Brothers Roofing, a company that has staked its 22-year history on the principles of high integrity, full disclosure and maximum customer service. In spending thousands of hours at the kitchen tables of my customers in the last four years, I have developed a love for my community and a strong desire to serve it.
My community has provided my family with a safe, prosperous environment and a quality of life that we are deeply thankful for. For many years now, I have had a growing sense that my responsibility to give my service back to my community would find its proper place. My candidacy for State Senate in District 22 is that proper place.
The emergence of my candidacy has truly been an expression of my community, and their concerns as voiced by them. I feel that my obligation to serve my community has now converged with my skill set as a communicator and organizer. As a Democrat, I can apply my personal commitment to the politics of inclusion. I will open the doors to the free flow ideas that keep my neighbors engaged in the process of true citizen government.
As the dad of two daughters in public schools and a precocious 2-year old son, my attention to excellence in education is paramount. As a small business owner, I am extremely sensitive to the reality that well-educated graduates are the true engine of a vibrant economy. You can?t build and sustain a first-rate economic structure by ignoring good education. EDUCATION EQUALS BUSINESS! We must aim our energies at creating an environment that is more than merely competitive. We must shoot for the stars when it comes to our children?s futures.
We have attracted great business thinkers and academic professionals to Colorado, but we have not made the commitments to education that will actually keep them here. As a state, we rank 48th in the nation in our re-investment in our own education! A simple review of this math tells us that we are on a path to non-sustainability of our state economy.
We can plant the seeds for a strong economy by growing superior graduates today.
However, there are politicians that shy away from education as a commitment because it requires a foresight that places the realized benefits far beyond the legislative careers of those who are in power to effect them. We need to make bolder investments in attitudes and systems of education not because it is politically convenient, but because it is right for Colorado.
Please take notice that the as-yet unheard voice in Senate District #22 may very well be your own. And please consider that perhaps one of the great attributes that I bring to this table is my ability to hear your voice regardless of your ideological position. 2006 promises to be one of the most interesting years in Colorado politics as more non-politicians like me take up the challenge to re-involve our communities in government by the people.
Don’t forget that Norma helped facilitate the demise of her own political ambition when she wanted the Senate presidency so bad that she helped Cairns lose his seat, as well as a wealth of other conservatives. The GOP effectively lost the legislature with the help of her antics.
